Lachlan McLaren-Kennedy, from Gold Coast, Advanced Business, 2021-2023
My mum spent a lot of time at St John’s when she was in uni because several of her friends were Johnians. When it came time for me to look at Colleges, John’s was the first one I visited, and I immediately knew this was the place for me.
Lachlan has two passions: basketball and finance. He is currently a Finance and Analytics major and when he isn’t studying or sleeping, he is on the basketball court.
He is the convenor for the John’s basketball team, as well as one of the team’s star athletes. Lachlan also plays for the Queensland State League (QSL) and coaches the 7th and 8th grade team at Ambrose Treacy College.
Coaching high schoolers proved to Lachlan how much he enjoys teaching and mentoring the younger generation. This led him to start tutoring which later evolved into a full-blown business.
Lachlan established Just Tutoring last year. Just Tutoring is a tutor matching service that helps parents find qualified tutors for their children. Many of his fellow Johnians serve as tutors.
“The best thing about St John’s is the level of support we get. The RAs really look after everyone and make you feel comfortable. I never hesitated to talk to any of them when I had something on my mind.
The staff is also incredibly supportive. If you want to do something, they will help you figure out how to make it happen. For instance, when I wanted to create Just Tutoring, I approached two staff members for advice. They gave me some ideas on how to market to potential customers and organise tutors. It made a big difference in helping the business get noticed.”
