Frequently Asked Questions

Sadly, no. But Ginny of John’s (the Warden’s dog and our unofficial College mascot) is always happy to give cuddles and take walks.

Limited parking is available on College grounds.

Please note, parking is allocated to senior students first, so many first and second years are not allocated a car park.

Many students do bring their cars to College and park on surrounding streets.

Rooms are fully furnished with all the necessities. Some students elect to bring a mini-fridge and television, but aside from that, there is no need for much else beyond your personal items.

All students receive contracts for the academic year, which includes the 5-week mid-year break in June/July and both mid-semester breaks.

Orientation week (O-week) occurs the week before the semester starts. This is a time when first-years move into the College and participate in fun educational and social events to help them acclimate and adjust to College life.

At St John’s College, we prioritise making O-week a fun, safe, and enjoyable experience for everyone.

A committee consisting of the Vice Warden, Associate Deans and senior student leaders allocate rooms.

Preferences are noted and students here longest and with leadership positions are allocated their rooms first. We do our best to accommodate requests.

Most residents share bathrooms with individuals in surrounding rooms. Common bathrooms are cleaned daily by staff.

Yes, washing machines and dryers are located around the College. There are hanging lines around the College perimeter on which to dry clothes, but you may want to consider bringing a portable rack to keep in your room.

Washing is free to current residents, to access this facility each resident must download the laundry app on the college app,  you must provide you own detergent. A charge of $2.00 is requsted to access the dryer facilities in the laundry.

There is a small, recently refurbished gym at St John’s College.

St John’s College students also receive a membership to UQ Sport’s Fitness and Aquatic Centre which includes access to the swimming pools, tennis courts, and other sports facilities.

We love friends at St John’s! You are welcome to have friends visit but you are responsible for their behaviour while on-campus.

And yes, visitors may stay overnight occasionally, but you are responsible for their behaviour. 

Yes, you must maintain good grades to remain at College. You must also remain enrolled at one of the three associated universities on a full-time basis to be a resident.

If you are struggling with your coursework, there are tutorials available to give you additional assistance. You can also meet with the Dean of Studies to discuss your individual situation and develop a study plan.

Acknowledgement of Country

St John's College acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands on which we live and learn, the Turrbal and Jagera peoples, and pay our respects to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge their ongoing spiritual and cultural connections to land, community and to Maiwar, the Brisbane River, on which our College now stands. We appreciate and value the interconnection of all First Nations people who visit this place.
