Sport

If you enjoy sport, whether on the field, or from the sidelines, there is something for everyone at St John’s College.

We’ve had professional athletes – and plenty of novices – at College over the years. Everyone is encouraged to support their fellow Johnians in their sporting endeavours, and participate, if they so wish.

Social Sport

There are several opportunities for students to play social sport.

Each day at 4pm, Johnians meet at the pond on campus and head across the street to the fields for Touch at 4. This is a casual, pick-up game open to all, regardless of skill or fitness level.

There are also social netball, soccer, touch footie, and basketball teams fielded by St John’s College.

ICC Sport Competition

St John’s College is a member of the Inter-College Council (ICC). ICC is the student council within The University of Queensland Colleges that promotes and organises sports, cultural, and community competitions.

The ICC organises sport competitions in which all 10 residential colleges participate and St John’s College frequently dominates.

The sporting success of St John’s is a reflection of the passion, commitment, and teamwork that defines the college. Whether it was winning cups, breaking personal records, or simply enjoying the thrill of competition, every participant contributed to the sense of community and pride that makes sport at St John’s College such a cherished tradition.

Whip Out!

If playing isn’t your forte, you can always Whip Out!

Johnians love to Whip Out and support their teams from the sidelines.

Jabba Whips promote College spirit, spread the word about upcoming matches, and organise the masses to Whip Out in their Choc and Gold gear to cheer on the John’s teams and sing the fight song.

Fitness

In addition to social and competitive sports opportunities, the sport convenors oversee a campaign in conjunction with the Living. Well. Being. program designed to encourage fitness, wellness, and healthy movement.

Similar to academic tutorials, small group sessions are held regularly in the College gym to introduce interested students to fitness, teach them how to use the gym, and provide guidance in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.

Instructor-led training sessions include:

  • Weightlifting (Women’s only and Co-ed sessions) (Intro and Advanced sessions)
  • Calisthenics
  • HIIT Circuit
  • Strength & Cardio
  • Dance Fit
  • and Yoga
