The Foundation

Established in 1988, the St John's College Foundation is responsible for raising funds for scholarships, student bursaries, and campus infrastructure development.

The Foundation meets quarterly.

Information about scholarships is available here and donations are accepted year-round.

Greg O'Meara (Chair)

Greg O’Meara is a partner of a legal practice in Brisbane CBD and specialises in commercial and property law.  He graduated from The University of Queensland with degrees in Commerce, Economics and Law.  He attended St John's between 1982 and 1984 and has been involved with the College Foundation since 2018.  Greg has a long history at St John’s, with his father, brothers, nieces and two of his children attending the College.

Hamish Bonifant

Hamish Bonifant graduated from The University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Economics in 1989 and is a stockbroker at Ord Minnett, a position he has held since 1996. Hamish has been an active member of the St John’s College community since the late ‘80s, having spent three years (1987-1989) as a resident. During that time, he held the roles of Student Club Executive Social Convener and President of the St John’s College Surf Life Saving Club. Hamish met his wife at Women's College and now has three daughters. In his free time he runs marathons because he is too slow to run shorter distances.

Andrew Carrick

Andrew attended College between 1994 and 1996. He served on the Student Club Executive as both Treasurer and Secretary. After completing a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) at UQ, Andrew commenced his professional career at EY before leaving to work with a global mining company in Australia and overseas. In 2003 he returned to EY. He is a Chartered Accountant, as well as an Assurance Partner and Mining & Metals Leader with EY. Married with twin daughters, Andrew enjoys running and is a keen supporter of the Queensland Reds.

Professor George Mellick

George Mellick is Professor of Neuroscience at Griffith University in Queensland. An interdisciplinary scientist and Research Leader in the Griffith Institute for Drug Discovery (GRIDD),  George is an advocate for people affected by neurological disease, the President of Parkinson’s Queensland and Vice-President of Parkinson’s Australia.

An alum of The University of Queensland and Old Johnian, George graduated with a PhD (in Medicine) in 1996. As an undergraduate, he served on the St John’s College Student Club Executive as Vice-President (1988) and President (1989). As a postgraduate, he tutored chemistry and biochemistry at the College.

Romana Miller

Romana holds a Bachelors of Laws and Commerce from UQ. She attended St John's College (2001-2003), serving as Social Convenor in her final year. Romana is Senior Legal Counsel for Sedgman Pty Ltd, a provider of minerals processing and associated infrastructure solutions to the global resources industry. She is also a mum to two young girls.

Catherine Parkinson

Catherine studied Laws and Commerce at UQ and is currently a Senior Manager in Business Tax Advisory at EY. She spent three years (2004-2006) at St John's and married a fellow Old Johnian. They have three children together as well as two Tiboodle puppies. Catherine enjoys participating in triathlons and cooking.

Peter Sullivan 

Peter Sullivan resided at St John's College for four years (1987-1990). During his final year at College, Peter served as the Student Club President which marked the first year of co-residency. Immediately upon completing his Commerce and Laws degrees at UQ in 1991, Peter joined the College Foundation. He is a Chartered Accountant by trade and has been involved in the property, finance and wealth industries for over 20 years. He is the General Manager of Astute Financial Group which operates nationally.

Dr Peter Trout

Dr Peter Trout is a mining engineer with more than 25 years’ executive and site management experience in the Australian and international resources industry, predominantly in precious and base metals mining. Peter attended the College from 1988 to 1991 and served as Student Club Vice President in 1990. He graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in the field of mining engineering. Peter joined the Foundation as a director in 2021 and resides in Brisbane.

Mark Williams

Mark enjoyed his first time at College (1982-1988) so much, he decided to return a second time (1994-1997). During the eleven years he spent on campus, Mark was Student Club Vice President, O-Week Director, ICC VP, Proctor and eventually, Senior Tutor. Mark holds honours degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Asian Languages and Studies from UQ.

Now a Brisbane-based telecommunications engineer, Mark previously worked for UQ and telecommunications manufacturers in Europe and China.
