Living at College is much more than just a functional room with a bed.
But accommodation is an important part of the College experience.

Overview & Tour

St John’s College provides comfortable and charming rooms where students study, rest, and relax in between classes and activities.

Rooms are fully furnished and located on co-ed corridors.

There are eleven (11) residential buildings, called blocks, at St John’s College.

Standard Rooms

Approximately 200 rooms are single-occupancy, standard rooms. They are situated in a traditional “dorm” style with rooms on both sides of a corridor and shared toilet amenities.

Each standard room contains a bed, desk, wardrobe, fan, lamp, and window. Some standard rooms also include a washbasin.

All first-year students and most second-year students live in standard rooms.

All rooms in the buildings adjacent to the courtyard are standard rooms.

Ensuite Rooms

About one-third of rooms include ensuites. Ensuite bathrooms are typically shared between two students and connect the bedrooms.

The rooms themselves are almost identical to standard rooms, with the same furniture provided.

Given the limited availability of ensuite rooms, they are typically allocated to senior students holding leadership positions.

Housekeeping

Student rooms are cleaned (bins are emptied, floors vacuumed, and surfaces disinfected) by professional housekeeping staff on a weekly basis. It should be noted housekeeping staff are not permitted to touch student belongings; if personal effects impede the cleaners’ ability to complete their tasks, cleaning/vacuuming may not occur.

Between services, students are expected to keep their rooms neat and tidy. Residents may request cleaning supplies as needed from the RAs in their block.

All bathrooms, corridors, and common areas are also cleaned weekly. Again, cleaners do their best to service these areas, but work around residents’ belongings if they are left out. Toilets are cleaned several times a week.

FAQs

Rooms are fully furnished with all the necessities. Some students elect to bring a mini-fridge and/or lamp, but aside from that, there is no need for much else beyond your personal items.

Linen service is NOT provided at College. Students must bring their own sheets, pillows, and towels.

Yes, washing machines and dryers are located throughout the College. There are hanging lines around the College perimeter on which to dry clothes. Laundry is paid for using an online student account app and you provide your own washing detergent.

Residential Advisors

Residential Advisors (RAs) live in every block, often on each floor, with students. RAs provide pastoral care, support the Living. Well. Being. program, serve as emergency contacts after hours, and liaise with the Senior Leadership Team regarding student needs. RAs are mostly second- and third-year students.

Common Areas

There are plenty of common areas throughout the College for students to spend their time.

In Annexe block, students can socialise in the Billiards Room at their leisure.

Adjacent to the Billiards Room is the Buttery (bar). St John’s is the only residential College at UQ with its own bar. The Buttery is open on designated days and times and operated by the Student Club.

Twickenham (called Twick by residents) houses the Junior and Senior Common Rooms, TV/Games Room, and Student Shop.

Each block also has its own common kitchenettes for student use and lounge rooms.

Students can access nearly a dozen music practice rooms located primarily in Foundation Court, the gym, the library, as well as the Harry Potter style dining hall

The Chapel

The Chapel is used primarily for special events, such as the Matriculation service on Welcome Day, and the Valedictory Service to celebrate those leaving College at the end of their three years as residents.

Concerts and performances are occasionally held in the Chapel. Weddings, baptisms, and other religious services occur by special request. Many alumni have been married or had their children baptised in the Chapel over the last three decades.

The Choir and musical ensembles frequently use the Chapel as a practice location, particularly because of its favourable acoustics and the organ and pianos housed inside.

Parking

Parking at St John’s College is limited; however, we do our best to accommodate as many students as possible with car parks. Car parks are allocated on a seniority, leadership and first-in, best-dressed basis.

Given the desire of students to bring their vehicles to College, first-year parking is not available. Street parking is available in the areas surrounding St John’s College, but daily fees are accessed.

For the second- and third-year students who are offered a car park at College, a fee is levied on their student accounts.
