Jack, Chemical Engineering

University of Queensland Chemical Engineering Tutor Jack LovedayA Young OJ (Old Johnian), Jack Loveday was a John’s resident (2018-2020) and has been tutoring Chemical Engineering courses at College ever since. He knows how challenging engineering classes are and the type of practice and repetition needed to fully understand the concepts, which is why he enjoys helping the first year Chem Eng students in their studies.

As a student, Jack found identifying and applying to engineering work placements took a lot of pre-planning and there was an art (and science) to successful applications. Knowing there is power in numbers, he formed a Facebook group for St John’s engineers so they could pull their resources. Students and recent leavers post internship and job postings, offer advice about applying, and network. Jack and recent leavers facilitate the group and encourage first year engineering students at John’s to join. They have now mentored six cohorts of Johnians through the group.

Jack completed three work placements during his undergraduate studies. He interned at Wilmar Sugar in Far North Queensland, did a mining placement with BHP, and experienced smelting in Mount Isa with Glencore Technology. When he graduates, Jack will move to Blackwater to take a graduate position.

Since Chemical Engineering is primarily problem-based, Jack guides students through practice example questions and does lots of demonstrations.

“I love connecting with people. I’m naturally a friendly person, so I try to get to know students, develop a rapport, and just bring a good attitude. Engineering is tough. Being positive when explaining something difficult or when someone is frustrated can make a massive difference in their experience”

When he isn’t on mining sites, Jack loves to travel. He took a gap year before starting uni to work at an English boarding school as a house Master and P.E. teacher. He travelled throughout Europe during his downtime and as a history lover, was especially fond of Athens.
