Liz Marsland, Accounting

University of Queensland Accounting Tutor Accountant Elizabeth MarslandLiz Marsland is a CPA with over 20 years’ experience as an accountant. She has taught accounting as a sessional lecturer at QUT for just as long.

Liz began tutoring at St John’s in 2021, working primarily with first year accounting students.

While she enjoys lecturing and her full-time accounting role, Liz is particularly fond of tutoring because the small group sessions allow her to really get to know her students and provide 1:1 attention.

As a tutor, especially in a numerically heavy subject such as accounting, Liz thinks it is critical to make the material relevant to students. She tries to use lots of real-world examples and relate concepts back to everyday interactions that students know and understand.

When she is teaching depreciation, Liz often uses a pizza to illustrate how a resource is depleted over time.

Liz is a proponent of phenomenon-based learning in the classroom. She actually did a TEDx talk on that approach which you can watch here.

“The ability to make a difference and see a student understand and be able to confidently continue their studies is really rewarding.”

Outside of the classroom and tax season, Liz is an avid reader and swimmer.

She loves getting to know her students, so feel free to connect with her on LinkedIn.
